1. Project's purpose

1.1. Move the mouse with the head's movements.

1.2. Provide diferent options to make the mouse's click with face's movements and/or with a clock (if you don't move the mouse for 1.5 seconds, a mouse click is done automaticatly).

2. Requirements

• Windows XP or Vista.
• A Webcam.
• HeadMouse 1 program (free).
• Minimal requirements. Pentium IV with 2GHz processor.

3. Webcam

3.1. A webcam that supports 640x480 resolution is needed.

Recommended webcams:

Logitech Quickcam Pro 5000 (XP and Vista)	Microsoft Live VX-6000 (XP and Vista)	Creative Live Ultra (XP)



3.2. Locate the webcam up the monitor with the user's head centered.



3.3. Webcam configuration (manual procedure that must be done by the user).

3.3.1. At webcam properties menu, the blinking filter control must be checked and must belong to your country main frecuency (usually 50Hz in Europe and 60Hz in North America).

3.3.2. At the webcam properties menu select the automatic gain control and the automatic white balance.

3.3.3. In general, it's not necessary to mirror the image horitzontally. If the horizontal head movement doesn't fit in with the horitzontal mouse movement, you can invert the image by means of webcam drivers or HeadMouse 1 configuration menu .

4. Software instalation

A. Windows XP

4.A.1. Accept the Freeware licence of use. The use of the application is free for non-commercial use (Licence).

4.A.2. Download the install file HeadMouse1Installer.exe (Version 1.0).

4.A.3. Execute the install file HeadMouse1Installer.exe and follow the installation steps. Probably the firewall will give a warning when the application attempt to access at the register. You should allow this access to led the aplication works propertly.

4.A.4. The instalation program creates a directory named HeadMouse1 that contains:

• HeadMouse1: the aplication.
• Uninstall: Uninstall program.
• CamaraControl: Allows you quickly access to the camera properties.
• Manual (html): Link to the program's web page and user's manual.
• Manual (pdf): pdf version of the program's web page and user's manual.

4.A.5. HeadMouse 1 will run automatically, gerenating a small window at the right-down corner of the monitor.

B. Windows Vista

4.B.1. Accept the Freeware licence of use. The use of the application is free for non-commercial use (Licence).

4.B.2. Download the install file HeadMouse1Installer.exe (Version 1.0).

4.B.3. Execute the install file HeadMouse1Installer.exe and follow the installation steps. Windows Vista will warn you that "An unknown program tries to access to this pc". Then push "Allow. I trust this program. I known its source or I have been working with it before".

4.B.4. The instalation program creates a directory named HeadMouse1 that contains:

• HeadMouse1: the aplication.
• Uninstall: Uninstall program.
• CamaraControl: Allows you to attempt quickly to the camera properties.
• Manual (html): Link to the program's web page and user's manual.
• Manual (pdf): pdf version of the program's web page and user's manual.

4.B.5. HeadMouse 1 will run automatically, gerenating a small window at the right-down corner of the monitor.

5. Optimum Windows configuration

A. Windows XP

5.A.1. It's recommended to enable the option "Move the pointer to the predetermined button in a dialog box automatically". To enable it:

5.A.1.1. Push the Start button.

5.A.1.2. Push the Control Panel button. Next select "Classic view".

5.A.1.3. Push the Mouse icon.

5.A.1.4. In the "Pointer options" flap, select "Move the pointer to the predetermined button in a dialog box automatically".

5.A.1.5. Push the Apply button.

5.A.1.6. Push the Accept button.

5.A.2. It's also recommended enable the following option "Only one click to open an element (select to point at)". To enable it:

5.A.2.1. Push the Start button.

5.A.2.2. Push the Control Panel button. Next select "Classic view".

5.A.2.3. Push the Folder options icon.

5.A.2.4. In the "general" flap, select "Only one click to open an element (select to point at)".

5.A.2.5. Push the Apply button.

5.A.2.6. Push the Accept button.

5.A.3. It's very recommended to increase the size of the folders and icons. To enable this option follow the steps:

5.A.3.1. Push the right mouse button when you are at the Descktop, select Properties from the list.

5.A.3.2. In the Appearance flap push the Efects button.

5.A.3.3. Mark Use big icons options from the emerged window.

5.A.3.4. Push the Apply button.

5.A.3.5. Push the Accept button.

B. Windows Vista

5.B.1. It's recommended to enable the option "Move the pointer to the predetermined button in a dialog box automatically". To enable it:

5.B.1.1. Push the Start button.

5.B.1.2. Push the Control Panel button. Next select "Classic view".

5.B.1.3. Push the Mouse icon.

5.B.1.4. In the "Pointer options" flap, select "Move the pointer to the predetermined button in a dialog box automatically".

5.B.2.1. Push the Start button of Windows.

5.B.2.2. Push the Control Panel button. Next select "Classic view".

5.B.2.3. Push the Folder options icon.

5.B.2.4. In the "general" flap, select "Only one click to open an element (select to point at)".

5.B.2.5. Push the Apply button.

5.B.2.6. Push the Accept button.

6. Uninstall windows software

A. Windows XP

There are two ways to uninstall HeadMouse 1:

Alternative 1:
1. Push the Start button.


2. Select the folder of HeadMouse1 and push "Uninstall".


3. Follow the assistant instructions to uninstall it.

Alternative 2:
1. Push the Start button.


2. Push the Control Panel icon.


3. Push the Add or remove programs icon.


4. Find and select HeadMouse1.


5. Push Change or remove button.


6. Follow the assistant instruccions to uninstall.

B. Windows Vista

There are two ways to uninstall HeadMouse 1:

Alternative 1:
1. Push the Start button.


2. Select the folder of HeadMouse1 and push "Uninstall".


3. You will be notified with a warning message that "An unknown program attempt to access to this pc". Then push "Allow. I trust this program. I know its source or I have been working with it before".


4. Follow the assistant instruccions to uninstall.

Alternative 2:
1. Push the Start button.


2. Go to PC.


3. Push Uninstall or change this program.


4. Find and select HeadMouse1 1.0.


5. Push Uninstall or change button.


6. Follow the assistant instruccions to uninstall.

7. HeadMouse 1 user manual

To use HeadMouse 1 you have to follow these steps:

7.1. Inicial user face detection.


During the calibration no mobile objects or people are allowed behind the user.



	Turn your head soft horizontally (small turns) and quickly until a green square appears around the face.
	The green square shows the detected zone as the face, from here on you can control the mouse with your head. If the selection is not correct, repite the procedure.

7.2. Mouse movement.

Move your head horizontally and vertically to control the mouse.




To accelerate the mouse, repeat the head movement in the same direction that the mouse moves.
To brake the mouse, make the head movement on the opposite direction to the mouse movement.
Combining the head movements you could get the diagonal mouse movement.

7.3. Making a click / sweep out.




To use the click methods, the user must be centered at the image.



• Method 1 (default click option)



Close the eyes (longer than an involuntary blinking).OR

Raise the eyebrow.



• Method 2 (default sweep out option)



Open the mouth.



• Method 3



Keep the mouse stopped during 1.5 seconds.

7.4. Sweep out an object (Icons, Windows, etc.)


The sweep out methods are equals as the click ones (eyes, mouth and clock). They can be disabled or be more than one enabled simultaneously but they can't coincide with the click methods. To sweep out an object you have to click it and move it to the desired place, to release it you have to make anothe click, both of them with the sweep out method option.

7.5. Pause mode. In this mode the control of the mouse is disabled temporarily.

• To access to pause mode:

Turn your head horizontally (small turns) and quickly.		Pause mode enabled.

• To take up again the mouse control:

Turn your head horizontally (small turns) and quickly.		The user has the mouse control (the head detection is repeated in this step).

7.6. User centered problems.

If the control of the mouse becomes problematic, execute the pause procedure to relocate the user's head.

7.7. Configuration.


To open the configuration menu.



Locate the cursor over the HeadMouse 1 window.	The image disappears. Wait 10 s until it appears again.	Click over the image.	It will open the menu.




The movement through option menu is done with the head movements.


Aplication options menu



	Allows to mirror the webcam image (needed if you move your head to the left and the mouse goes to the right and vice versa.)
	Selects incial velocity of the pointer.
	Selects the sensibility of the movement.
	Selects of the click method.
	Selects the sweep out method.
	OK: Accept the changes and leave the menu. CANCEL: Descart the changes and leave the menu. EXIT: Get out of the program, closing it!!

7.8. Close the aplication.
